Jakarta plans to redraw rules for investment proposals

Indonesian's senior economic minister, Ginandjar Kartasasmita, vowed to eliminate the tedious procedures and arbitrary decisions that illustrated the government's management of foreign and local investment proposals under ex-President Suharto. He added that incentives such as tax holidays will be highly transparent. Earlier in June 1998, the government disclosed it would alter investment policies in a bid to draw much needed funds to its waning economy.

Mahathir halts infrastructure projects, reverses limits
Article Abstract:
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad decided to suspend various infrastructure projects in a move to restore investors' confidence on the country's troubled economy. Mahathir also removed trading restrictions on the short-selling of 100 blue-chip stocks at the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange to boost Malaysia's declining stock market. Some of the infrastructure projects suspended include the $5.04 billion Bakun dam.

Indonesian debate pits big firms against small
Article Abstract:
Large corporations and small business firms in Indonesia are locked in a bitter debate over proposed legislation that would make the latter more competitive with the former. However, Pres. Suharto has so far opted for temporary measures to tackle the problem. Indonesian conglomerates criticized the proposed measure as contradictory to the government's avowed policy to deregulate the economy.
