Japan's inconspicuous consumption
Article Abstract:
Consumers are saving more in Japan, and this reluctance to spend is mainly due to fear of unemployment. Corporate debt and pressure on profits have meant that more companies have gone bankrupt. Unemployment has increased to 3.6% and could rise further, and there is only a weak safety net for the unemployed. Overtime has been reduced for those in work, which has meant a drop in real incomes. Saving is also seen as necessar to prepare for retirement. A recession could be beneficial in triggering necessary changes in the economy.

So rich, so poor: Japan
Article Abstract:
Japan's trade surplus with the US could be reduced if Japan would lower its tax rate, giving its people more cash to buy foreign goods. The government denies this, but the high tax rate may be backfiring as the economy has dropped sharply and the highly taxed citizenry cannot spend enough.
