KENYA/UGANDA: REVIEW OF BAMBURI CEMENT COMPANY
Article Abstract:
Bamburi Cement is a Kenyan cement manufacturer held jointly by the French group, Lafarge, and the UK group, Blue Circle, and also present in Uganda. Since 1996, the consumption of cement has continued to decline. In 1999, the Kenyan consumption average was 38kg, compared to neighbouring Uganda, with 20kg. In 1999, Bamburi lost 5% of the market, and registered a 6% drop in sales to 619,000 tons, due to an improved production and more aggressive commercial strategy from rival, East African Portland Cement (EAPC). Bamburi intends to use Uganda as a platform to enter other markets in Rwanda, Burundi, and the Congo Republic, due to the slump in markets in the Indian ocean. In order to bring its factories up to international standard, US$ 20mn was invested on its site in Mombasa, and US$ 40mn was invested on a clinker crushing plant in Nairobi, while Uganda has the objective of increasing its production from 150,000 tons of cement to 200,000 tons in the year 2000. Between 1998 and 1999, Bamburi Cement saw its turnover go from FFr 450mn to FFr 615mn, of which 21% was made in Uganda.
