KTDC SHIFTS FOCUS TO UPMARKET CLIENTELE
Article Abstract:
Encouraged by the rising tourism industry in the state, the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) plans to shift its focus to upmarket clientele and improve its operating margins. The corporation is expected to wipe out all its accumulated losses in 1998-99. In 1996-97, it recorded an operating profit of Rs3.06 crore on a net income of Rs35.38 crore. At present, KTDC runs 13 hotels, 12 motels, three Yatri Nivas, six house boats, 41 beer parlours and three central reservation networks. In 1998-99, the Corporation plans to add 100 more rooms to the existing capacity of 150 deluxe rooms. The net accommodation of the corporation will go up from 507 rooms and 1,103 beds at present to 644 rooms and 1,394 beds, once the expansion plans are completed. In 1997, the tourism outlay for the estate increased to Rs35 crore from Rs1.50 crore in 1986, in which period the foreign tourist arrivals went up four times from 50,000 to 200,000. The percentage of foreign tourists visiting Kerala while in India has also increased from four percent to eight percent in the same period. (gsh)

VJIL CONSULTING TO FOCUS ON SOFTWARE EXPORTS

VJIL Consulting Ltd plans to focus on software exports by increasing its marketing network globally. It has set up offices in London, Chicago and New Jersey for sales and support. It plans to open offsite centre in California by the end of 1998. It has tied up with a Netherlands company for Euroconversion services. It plans to increase exports though focus on euro currency conversion, Internet, Intranet and e-commerce services. It posted a turnover of Rs4.12 crore in the first half of 1998-99. Exports accounted for 75 percent of the total turnover, training 15 percent and domestic sales 10 percent. (rk)

KTDC TO FOCUS ON NEW BEACHES
Article Abstract:
The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) has decided to develop new beach resorts at Muzhappilangadu, Payyambalam and Meenkunu. It has already spent Rs1 crore on cleaning the beaches and constructing roads to the beaches. Samudra, KTDC's beach-side property at Kovalam beach has been performing well while its property at the Varkala beach near Kollam, which is run by the Taj group, is one of the better-known beach resorts in the state. KTDC will shortly commission a Rs6 crore property at Munnar and a river-side resort at Kumarakom near Kottayam. (khr)
