The Conservative Party is being increasingly prone to increase government spending in order to please the British public before the 1997 elections. Chancellor of the Exchequer Kenneth Clarke is also being pressured to cut taxes, which would increase the UK's financial problems.

Article Abstract:

Chancellor Clarke's five-year budget for Britain reads more like a budget of the Labour Party than of the Conservative Party. Instead of large tax cuts, there are only modest ones, and there are no provisions to reduce public spending.
