Article Abstract:

The tourism market in Italy shows that domestic tourists prefer the coasts with 28.4% and about 40% in bed nights in 1997. The cities of arts, however, are more popular among incoming tourists with 42.2% of them visiting such destinations with about 27% in bed nights in 1997. The second most popular destinations for incoming tourists is the coasts with 18.5% visits, while for domestic tourists their second preference are the cities of arts. The third most popular destination among domestic tourists are mountains with 12.9% of them going to mountain resorts.

Article Abstract:

Outgoing tourism in Italy is expected to realize growth at a rate that is slower than incoming tourism. The boost will come largely from the improved economic situation in Italy and the appreciation of the lira, which will give consumers greater purchasing power. The growing number of package holidays and cheaper flights offered by travel agencies will also attract more consumers to engage in leisure activities outside of Italy. The boost in outgoing tourism is also expected to increase the number of tour operators in the country.
