French people take long holidays in near comparison with the European average and share the same propensity for taking their main holiday in the summer months, especially in August. About 3% more people took a holiday in 1997 versus figures in 1996, with the average length of stay growing from six to eight days. The growth reflects the strengthening of the French economy and the failing price of travel. However, French prefer to stay in their country with only about 25% of the 63% of the adult population who regularly take holidays venturing overseas.

France recorded that more than 85.1% of its population choose to take a car for travelling in their own country. The large share for the mode of transportation indicate a preference for independence while travelling and rarely taking package tours. Excellent road system in France is also a factor in encouraging car usership, though roads are tended to become blocked on certain holiday weekends. The train represented for only 7% of holiday travel by the population in France, despite an extensive railway network in the country.

France is seeing a growing trend towards longer haul destinations in taking holidays as air fares become more affordable, despite a tradition to stay within the country. One of the long-haul sites of the population is the Caribbean particularly Cuba, a destination providing a historial fascination or the French. French tour operators and hotel groups have been fast to respond to the growth in demand by opening new hotels and holiday villages in Cuba. The island saw a 20% increase in French tourists in 1995 to 35,000 people.
