Korea contest lures artists

Article Abstract:

The 1999 edition of the Male Root Carving Competition in Samchok, South Korea has gathered 20 teams of sculptors who were given three days to produce the most artistic rendition of the male sex organ. The contest is part of the city's festival to celebrate the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. It is the first time that the competition has been opened nationwide as part of Samchok's goal to position itself as a tourist spot. The winner of the sculpting contest will get one million won which is equivalent to $813.

The German DIY market

Statistical data and other types of information on the German market for DIY, home improvement tools and supplies, are presented. Home improvement refers to the maintenance, new construction, and renovation of new houses. A rise in East Germany's housing standards have spurred the growth in DIT products, which are expected to increase by 37 percent until 1999. Major players in the industry include Robert Bosch AG, Henkel, Black & Decker GmbH and BASF Lacke + Farben AG.

Artists in residence

Article Abstract:

Two semi-detached houses, in Dessau, Germany, designed in the 1920s by Architect Walter Gropius have been restored. Their internal decorations reflect the work of former occupiers Artists Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.
