Western sympathy for the Kurds in northern Iraq has eroded as a fratricidal war has divided them into two camps - the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. The US set up the Kurd's Northeren Iraq safe haven in 1991 to protect them from Saddam Hussein's forces.
