Article Abstract:
According to the Spanish national statistics institute, the yearly inflation rate was 2% in May, 1998, after a rise of one tenth for the month. Food prices rose on tenth and services prices were up three tenths for an accumulated rate of 2.1% and an annual rate of 3.5%. The underlying inflation rate for the 12 months leading up to May was 2.4%, five tenths higher than one year earlier. The predicted rate for 1998 is 2.1% according to the government. But the secretary of finance is asking that services and tourism prices be kept down.

According to the central bank of Spain, Banco de Espana, the GDP is expected to be 3.7% in 1998 and inflation will not exceed 2%. According to the latest report by the bank, the macroeconomic stability achieved in 1997 has improved in early 1998 despite the fact that internal demand has been the thrust behind GDP growth while imports increased and exports began to chip away at the GDP. Private consumption is continuing to gain momentum, according to the report, with salaries on the rise despite a call for moderation.

La inflacion sera del 1.9% en diciembre, segun el Boletin IPC
Article Abstract:
According to the CPI bulletin published by the university of Carlos III in Spain, by year end 1998 the inflation rate could be only 1.9%, as opposed to the 2.1% predicted by the central government, and compared to the 2.2% in July. Underlying inflation is expected to stay at higher levels, at around 2.3%, due mainly to higher services prices, which are expected to register a year-on-year rise of 3.5% by the end of the year.
