The military or Islamic fundamentalists may take control of Pakistan if Sharif's government fails as it did in 1993 due to charges of corruption. To establish a clean, effective government, Sharif should make needed economic reforms and give up his power as the prime minister to appoint judges.

The resounding defeat of the Pakistan People's Party in Feb 3, 1997, elections and victory of Nawaz Sharif and his Pakistan Muslim League party could benefit Pakistan. Sharif plans to privatize industry and reduce tax rates, and may consider changing government laws to better serve the people.

Nawaz Sharif has taken a bold political step by removing some of the controversial powers traditionally held by Pakistan's indirectly elected president. Presidents were able to fire prime ministers, which they often did. Other changes are also discussed.
