Article Abstract:

Pres George Bush's decision to allow Americans to open representative offices in Vietnam has made companies more impatient about the 18-year old embargo of Vietnam being lifted. Corporations are anxious to invest in a largely untapped market of 70 million people. Investment areas include Vietnam's petroleum industry, infrastructure, banks and telecommunications, but stiff competition exists from countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Moreover, Vietnam will have to remove existing corruption, improve its weak legal system, bureaucracy and near bankrupt economy.

As a result, both the Republicans and the Democrats are attempting the tap them as a resource, enabling them to play a major role in fund raising and to achieve positions of power and prestige through political appointments.
