Leaders who make a difference

Article Abstract:

Business leaders Richard Branson of Virgin, Percy Barnevik of ABB and Jack Welch of General Electric provide several insights into what makes an effective business leader and therefore a successful organisation. The three men seem to be very different in character and operational codes: Barnevik is an 'operator', Branson a 'builder' and Welch a 'transformer of organisations'. However, there are similarities, including deeply-held values and beliefs which motivate them to spread their vision. Each of the three men also aims to make a positive contribution to society.

The human side of downsizing

Article Abstract:

Downsizing is often used to make an business organisation leaner, more efficient and competitive. Careful consideration, however, must be given to the management of change to ensure that staff morale and essential staff skills are maintained. Employees should not be overloaded with extra work and key performers should be retained. Corporate transformation is a more positive and flexible term to describe an organisation's realignment to the current market conditions.
