Although casino gambling was the most popular leisure activity among Americans in 1995, the industry is in decline due to the negative economic and social consequences of casinos' economic success. Casinos do not stimulate local economies as predicted, but actually increase costs.

Despite the negative social consequences of legalized gambling in Australia, most politicians continue to support the building of new casinos because they bring money and work. However, the gambling boom may soon end as the market becomes saturated and profits decline.
