Lessons from Bosnia
Article Abstract:
The United Nations (UN) has issued a report on a massacre in Bosnia in 1995, when some 7,000 Muslims were killed in Srebrenica, which had been declared a 'safe area' by the UN. Children and women died, as well as men, and the UN admits to having made mistakes, including negotiations that effectively involved appeasement. Ambiguity can create problems in a similar way to appeasement, and clarity showing that aggressors will meet with a fight can prevent aggression.
