Omnidocument technologies
Article Abstract:
Calera Recognition System Inc's optical character recognition (OCR) engine is a viable technology for a wide range of applications. It is omnifont and robust on individual degraded characters, with its weakest link being its handling of characters that are joined to adjacent characters. The engine consists of segmentation, image recognition, ambiguity resolution and document analysis, and its features are zonal and reduce the image to a blurred, gray-level representation. The classifier is trained off-line, data-driven and model free, and its handcrafted features and decision trees tend to be brittle when confronted with noise. To satisfy full text applications, the system captures the structure of the document so that the formatting of the scanned document reflects the formatting of the original document. A proofing and correction tool displays 'pop-up' images of uncertain characters to satisfy the needs of the forms market.

Let the good times roll
Article Abstract:
Architects' workloads grew throughout 1998, according to research by Mirza & Nacey, but architects are pessimistic about the future. Workloads are similar to the record levels of 1989/90. The major growth sectors are office and leisure projects, but the health and education sectors are also important. The most pessimistic architects are those in smaller practices. This trend supports findings that there are fewer small-scale projects undertaken by small architectural practices for small clients but more big projects involving major clients and big practices.
