Line in the sand: a Muslim politician's fall from grace shows there are limits to how much religious modernists can hope to influence politics

Article Abstract:

President Suharto of Indonesia decides how much Islam and politics can mix in Muslim-majority Indonesia. Suharto has railed against Amien Rais, the Muslim leader, accusing him of making subversive statements. Rais then resigned as head of the board of experts of Science and Technology Minister B.J. Habibie's Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI). Others to have crossed Suharto include Sri Brintang Pamungkas who will stand trial for unconstitutional activities. Abdurrahman Wahid, leader of Nahdlatul Ulama, has been critical of ICMI saying it is a threat to secularism.

Political banquet: VIP wedding shows ex-minister's clout

Article Abstract:

Benny Murdani, former defense minister of Indonesia, showed his continuing influence in that country at his daughter's Sep 22, 1993 wedding. The presidents of Indonesia and the Philippines were in attendance, as well as the Sultan of Brunei and two ex-kings of Malaysia. Since Murdani was dropped from the defense cabinet in early 1993, he has maintained a high profile. A late invitation was extended to the Indonesian president, but several key officials did not attend, leading to speculation that Murdani and the current administration are still at odds.

Coming together; new groupings point to widespread political unease

Article Abstract:

New political organizations have emerged in Indonesia in recent months, apparently in an effort to counter the influential Indonesian Assn of Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI), and to prevent other forms of social upheaval. The Assn of Intellectuals for Pancasila Development is strongly non-sectarian and the most clearly aimed at the ICMI, which is headed by Research and Technology Minister BJ Habibie. Other groups include the Natl Brotherhood Foundation, the Indonesian Muslim Congregation, and Indonesian Natl Unity.
