Lloyds Bank PLC officials will decide at an Apr 24, 1992 board meeting whether to tender a merger offer for its financially-troubled rival Midland Bank PLC. Midland is being actively sought by HSBC Holdings, the holding firm that owns Hongkong and Shanghai Bank.

Hongkong Bank's global gamble

The proposed merger of HongKong Bank and Midland Bank would create a bank that is in the position to finance growing trade and investment between Europe and Asia. In order to succeed, the merged banks must use their global reach to create new business.
