General Electric Company (GEC) is likely to play a major role in restructuring Europe's defense industry. GEC's managing director is Lord Simpson who is breaking up GEC. He plans to separate the defense and commercial divisions of Marconi to be able to merge or sell the main defense business of Marconi more easily. He is likely to be left with consumer and industrial companies that are not likely to be used as the basis for a new GEC, and stockholders may receive cash, or there may be more divestments.
