MTNL: REVOLUTIONIZING COMMUNICATION

Article Abstract:

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) provides and operates all types of telecom services in Delhi and Mumbai. Its exchange capacity is 37 lakh lines while its working lines are 33.5 lakh. As on March 31 1997, MTNL's revenues were Rs4,017 crore. As on December 31, 1997 MTNL's market capitalisation was Rs139.4 billion. Its net profits grew by 21.2 percent from the first half of 1997-98. MTNL's GDR issue accumulated $358 million at a marginal premium in the market price of Rs235 per share. The government holds 56.4 percent of MTNL's equity MTNL has been awarded the Navratna status and is now looking for full autonomy so that it can compete with private operators. MTNL plans to increase its penetration level from 12 percent to 18 percent by 2002 AD. It plans to invest Rs10,000 crore between 1998 and 2002 AD to increase its lines from 3.2 million to 5.9 million. MTNL has extended its revenue sharing agreement with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) with the present conditions unchanged. Its licence for operating basic telecom services has been extended by 15 years. MTNL plans to become a Fortune 500 group company. (tsm)
