Major hubs face flight frequency growth
Article Abstract:
Boeing's June 1998 Current Market Outlook edition contains three messages for airport managers worldwide. The number of airlines will double in the next 20 years. The Asian financial crises will cut traffic growth forecasts over the next five years on major Asian routes. Airlines will increase their capacity by adding more frequent flights with smaller aircraft. "Increasing demand has led to more flights and new routes... The record shows growth in demand has led to denser airline networks and new routes. Thus, the mix of aeroplanes in the world fleet has not changed to favour larger aeroplanes," said the Boeing report.

Are software and air traffic control incompatible?
Article Abstract:
Existing software is not capable of running a complex, green-field air traffic control (ATC) system, according to an increasing number of experts. These experts say software reliability is compromised by the too many ways by which the software can malfunction, and there is simply no way by which the developer can anticipate all these problems given the complexity of the project. These criticisms notwithstanding, some huge national ATC en-route programs do become commissioned.
