Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad wants to develop a biotechnology zone in Kuala Lumpur. The government is working with Massachusetts Institute of Technology scientists to attract foreign investors and to develop natural resource- and agriculture-based biotechnology ventures. Malaysia faces stiff competition from other Asian nations for biotechnology investments.

Malaysian IT firms fear censorship may loom

Malaysian web-based businesses worry that pending government censorship may hinder investment income. The Malaysian government is considering regulating online content much like it does print media. Malaysian government official Rais Yatim contends that the government's interest is in stopping illegal activities on the internet, not censorship.
