Malaysia's incomplete democracy

Article Abstract:

Elections have been held in Sabah, Malaysia, where prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has been victorious. This could be seen by Mahathir as a defeat for his critics, but Sabah is atypical, and there is support for Anwar Ibrahim, the ousted former deputy prime minister in the Malay peninsula. Anwar may be imprisoned, but this will not silence the opposition. Mahathir may choose to hold elections if there is favorable economic news, though this may only be temporary. Mahathir should create a real democracy in Malaysia, but he does not appear willing to do so.

The verdict on Malaysia

Article Abstract:

Former Malaysian deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has been sentenced to six years in jail on corruption charges. His movement for reform calls for greater freedom for individuals, moves against corruption, and a justice system that is fairer. There have been protests over his sentence, but the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) is in a strong position, having been the ruling coalition since 1957. Prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, is in a strong position through UMNO, while Anwar's position has not been helped by his having to leave UMNO.
