Managing design change: building the capacity to deal with change into a project at the outset will save a lot of difficulties in the long run
Article Abstract:
Successful design practices are those than can successfully manage change. Client driven changes can decide whether a project makes a profit or a loss, therefore it should be accepted at the start of a project that changes will occur. A change control management system should be set up, although changes are often difficult to estimate. The 'client's brief' usually details a construction project's objective, and two major reports on the briefing process have recently been published. Changes need to be recognized before they can be controlled, and this is best determined by parties directly involved in the details of a project.

Social housing under threat: standardised future for homes
Article Abstract:
Social housing is likely to be built in standardised types as pressure to save money increases. The National Federation of Housing Associations and the House Builder Federation have produced a joint document stressing that standardised house types can be produced more cheaply and that design changes add to costs. The Housing Corporation has emphasised that there will not be mandatory standards for design, space or energy. The role of the architect will diminish as housing associations move to direct deals with builders.
