Mantrust's thirst quencher
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian Mantrust group's sale of it's controlling stake in Delta Djakarta Brewery to Philippines' San Miguel Corp, will help the group repay its enormous debt, which resulted from a massive expansion program. Mantrust, a large Indonesian food conglomerate, will henceforth, limit its business to tuna, mushrooms, milk processing, distribution and can-manufacturing. San Miguel's purchase of Indonesia's second largest brewery, which feeds 40% of the Indonesian beer market, will pave the way for international expansion for the Philippine beer giant.

Technology, at a price: shipbuilder PAL is heavily subsidised
Article Abstract:
PT PAL shipyard is the largest in Indonesia and the recipient of $360 million in government money since 1980. This money has bankrolled constant expansion in fulfillment of Minister for Research and Technology Bachruddin Habibie's ambition to make Indonesia a major shipbuilder. Such a status is essential to a country made up of 6,000 islands. Inefficiency in some aspects of PT PAL's work is attributable to its large domestic market and reliance on direct and indirect government subsidies.

Pirates' lair: Taiwan's software copiers perfect the hologram
Article Abstract:
Software piracy in Taiwan is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Pirates even copy fine details such as holograms, packaging and warranty cards of computer programs and successfully sell off counterfeit copies at the price of the originals. Concern over the blatant copying, which causes manufacturers such as Microsoft Corp to lose more than $1 billion in sales, has led the US to pressurize Taiwan into signing a comprehensive agreement on intellectual property rights.
