Marriage of convenience

Article Abstract:

The joint exercise between the Indian and US navies in May 1992 marks a new era in Indian-US relations. India's military capability and its apparent willingness to take a more active part in regional security has forced the US to eye the country as a military ally. Additionally, both countries are concerned about threats posed by militant Islamists. However, nuclear non-proliferation, the protection of intellectual property rights and human rights are some of the thorny issues blocking the further improvement of Indian-US ties.

Asia's new world order

Article Abstract:

A general desire for prosperity and an aversion for war bode well for Asia's future. US-Japanese relations are of vital importance to Asia. Japan must continue to trust its defensive alliance with the US, while the US must be reassured that its economic interests will improve through the opening of Asian, and especially Japanese, markets. China's rising influence and Russia's still-formidable power will also complicate Asia's foreign policy.

Advance Australia fair: mix one part Asia, one part Europe

Article Abstract:

Australia's future role in Asia has become a majorissue in the upcoming federal elections. Labor candidate and incumbent PM Paul Keating contends that Australia must sever its ties with the UK if it is to benefit from the Asian economic boom. However, Australia need not cut all its ties with the Old World. The country merely needs to rid itself of the legaciesof Eurostatism and protectionism which have contributed to its economic stagnation.
