Article Abstract:

Radio broadcasting started to undergo consolidation in the late 1980s, and the process was speeded up from 1996 as a result of liberalization. The five biggest companies each have over 100 stations, while none had over 40 stations at the beginning of 1996. There are complaints that content is becoming similar and local news is being reduced. Clear Channel is to acquire AMFM, and may seek to make the deal pay through advertising. Competition from the Internet may make life difficult for broadcasters seeking to attract advertising.

Article Abstract:

Turkey has gone from a government broadcasting monopoly to a totally deregulated environment of over 300 TV and 1000 radio stations. The movement began with foreign satellite broadcasts and transmitters and dishes set up by local politicians. A flood of new stations became impossible to regulate.
