Michelin gets a grip

The French tire firm Michelin earned after-tax profits of $610 mil in 1996, evidence that its reorganization is working. The firm has laid off 25,000 workers since 1990, and is putting new emphasis on financial performance and local decision making. It is also developing the new C3M machine.

Hubertus von Grunberg, CEO of the German tire company Continental, successfully turned around the company using American management methods when it was close to being a victim of a competitive marketplace. He plans to use German technology to further improve the company.
