As Debts Mount, BT Prepares to Restructure

A major restructuring plan has been announced by British Telecommunications PLC as the company attempts to cope with huge debts. BT, which will launch an intial public offering for its wireless unit, will spin off its Internet division.

Microsoft gambles in European push for digital television; technology isn't in focus, and cable service record has consumers skeptical

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp is trying to become the largest investor in the United Kingdom's cable industry, recognizing that Britain is at least a year ahead of Europe in terms of digital and interactive television services. Microsoft has invested $500 million in NTL Inc and has agreed to buy 30% of TeleWest Communications PLC. Microsoft is now in talks with Cable and Wireless PLC, hoping to acquire as much as 30% the British firm's cable unit for about $4 billion. In Jul 1999, C and W will offer sharp-picture digital-TV service, and in Oct 1999 it will offer access to 100 Internet sites through cable TV. However, 65% of British households do not think digital television services are worth paying for.

Vodafone prepares new Mannesmann bid

Article Abstract:

Vodafone AirTouch PLC is expected to make a new offer to acquire Mannesmann AG. The new all-share bid is valued at a minimum of 235 euros per share. This comes out to 119.1 billion euros.
