Mini electronics smarten up small units

Article Abstract:

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has launched a program, called Smart Modules, to develop and demonstrate a line of lightweight, low-power, modular packages which integrate sensors, microprocessors and communications. The program was launched to overcome the existing limitations on the ability of individual soldiers to sense their surroundings and control the available resources. Smart Modules will focus on imaging/video, electronic warfare, input/output and position location. Some technology for the program could come from the Personal Inertial Navigation System which BBN Technologies is developing under its two contracts.
