Minister on the line

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Posts Datuk Seri Samy Vellu is under suspicion of improper allocation of shares. In September 1990 10 million Telekom Malaysia shares were offered to Maika Holdings, the investment arm of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), by the Finance Ministry but 9 million of those shares were allegedly given to private companies connected with MIC leaders. As a result, the ethnic Indian community is in an uproar and many do not believe Samy Vellu's explanation.

Enter Anwar: finance minister joins the succession contest

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim declared on Aug 23, 1993 that he will run against Deputy Prime Minister Ghafar Baba for the deputy presidency of the ruling United Malays National Organisation (Umno) in November party elections. The long-anticipated announcement indicates that Anwar hopes that he, and not Ghafar, will succeed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad. The large number of Umno officials present at the announcement presages a strong challenge from the ambitious Anwar.

Nearly there: Anwar inches towards candidacy for top Umno post

Article Abstract:

Anwar Ibrahim may challenge Ghafar Babar for the second highest position in Umno in party elections to be held in Malaysia late in 1993. Anwar's opponents criticize him as overly ambitious and claim that he is manipulating the stock market to finance his campaign, a charge he denies. He is supported by younger members of the party and by middle-class businessmen who like his business-oriented political direction.
