Mo and Mo

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Northern Ireland secretary, Mo Mowlam, is popular in mainland Britain as a human being who is informal and met a wide range of people in Northern Ireland, in contrast to her more formal predecessors. Some senior Ulster Unionists in Northern Ireland initially liked Mo Mowlam for her directness, but argue that they are not longer able to cooperate with her. This is especially true following her statement that the Irish Republican Amry ceasefire had held, but her informality offends many unionists, who tend to be formal, and are also unused to seeing women in public life. There may be wisdom in replacing her, though it may not be fair.

Politics or paranoia

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government has announced the abandonment of a plan for benefits to be paid through terminals in Post Offices, and this is linked to an amivalent attitude to identity cards. Such cards could help cut benefit fraud, but the government is afraid of the political consequences of introducing identity cards. A white paper on 'Modernising Government' is vague on the topic. It is unclear who would issue the cards, and theinformation that they would include. Opinion polls show support for cards for teenagers, and for cards to be used on a voluntary basis. There is a need for more debate on this issue.
