Mob rule: organized crime pushes into politics
Article Abstract:
Politicians and observers decry the increasing presence of organized crime at every level of Taiwanese politics. Justice officials are no longer immune to attacks, and a third of the nation's elected city and county councillors were convicted of vote-buying in a recent campaign. A like number have criminal records, and 60% of town and village representatives have ties to the underworld. The ruling Kuomintang party's eagerness for support in competitive elections has helped hoodlums to enter power.

Revolt from within: president faces threat from inside the KMT
Article Abstract:
Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui faces several vociferous challenges from inside his own Kuomintang party, but these could win him support among native Taiwanese. Chiang Wei-guo, adopted son of former president Chiang Kai-shek, leads a group of mostly first-generation mainland Chinese. A similar group, the New Unification Alliance, has unsuccessfully wooed the New Party. Sun An-ti heads a group of second-generation mainlanders. All accuse Lee of selling out China and the ideals of Sun Yat-sen.
