Model state: Burma's generals want Indonesian-style politics

Article Abstract:

Burmese military leaders hope to model their country's new political structure on Indonesia's, but the latter, while having close ties to Burma, is trying to lower the profile of those aspects Burma likes. Of particular interest is Indonesia's concept of 'dwifungsi,' or dual function, which formalizes a political role for the military. Burma and Indonesia have a long shared tradition and their militaries have many similarities, so Burma's generals think they can easily write their power into the constitution.
