Mr NICE GUY TRIES TO PLAY TOUGH
Article Abstract:
The Rs940-crore Eicher group's main businesses are tractors, commercial vehicles and motorcycles, which account of 85 percent which is hampering its growth. In tractors, its presence is limited to the below 30 horse power (hp) segment, in commercial vehicles it operates in the six tonne to nine tonne range while in motorcycles, it is present in the 350 cc category. The group's chairman Subodh Bhargava has chalked out plans to take Eicher onto a higher growth plan. Eicher Motors, a group company, is entering into heavy commercial vehicles, the engine of which will be developed in technical collaboration with AVL of Austria. Eicher Ltd, the group flagship, has developed 42 hp and 50 hp tractors with technology from Ricardo of the UK. Eicher Ltd is launching a 60 hp tractor by end of 1999 in technical collaboration with Valtra of Finland. It is also expanding its range of motorcycles by launching a 500 cc Machismo and a 634 cc motorcycle, currently unnamed. Bhargava expects the growth rate to improve by 30 percent to 35 percent per annum with these initiatives. Eicher also plans to provide total farm solutions and its tractor assembly plant at Hyderabad will be converted into an implements plan. It is also setting up a new motorcycle plant near Jaipur which will cater the northern market. This will take Eicher total motorcycle capacity to 50,000 units per annum by end of 1998. Eicher also plans to export its motorcycles to Japan, the US and European countries. (tsm)
