Murphy's magic

Article Abstract:

Architect Richard Murphy's first large project, the Dundee Arts Centre, Scotland, is a success. He had to design a building which would spearhead the rebirth of Dundee, but the site presented a range of challenges. Murphy felt that the building must face the city, but the city face was only 10 metres wide. Murphy used windows to light up the interior when viewed from outside and encourage people to enter. He has also made good use of a former warehouse which occupies part of the site, and generally applied his extrovert personality and eye for detail to create an enjoyable building.

Photographer Tim Soar discusses his new AJ series that combines photography, portraiture and reportage at the AJ/100% Design seminar. Soar has learned to place greater trust in his intuitive reaction to image-making, to relinquish some of the control he has previously exerted.
