Musical emissary: disc jockey bridges cultural gap with Western pop music

Article Abstract:

US-based disc jockey Jay Shih records shows involving modern Western music and ships them to China and Taiwan for broadcast to a hip young audience fascinated with all things foreign. Shanghai-born, he grew up in Taiwan and was a semiconductor salesman in Silicon Valley before turning to this career. He now broadcasts in Taiwan and nine Chinese provinces, plus three US cities with large Asian populations. His show focuses on timeliness and popular appeal, including rhythm & blues and country-western music.

Dead poet's fans: ignored in life, he is now a hero

Article Abstract:

The Chinese poet Zha Haisheng has become popular now that he is dead. He died at the age of 25 in 1989 of suicide. He lived a solitary life , writing poetry and plays to condemn a greedy and unjust world lacking proper religious faith. Starting in 1983 he renounced modern possessions and lived a life of reading and writing. His message of contempt has been seized upon by the new generation, and he is now widely published.
