Article Abstract:

National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco), the largest manufacturer- exporter of alumina and aluminium in India, exports its products to about 31 countries including the US, UK, France, Norway, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, Russia, Australia, China and Japan. It exported 480,000 tonnes of alumina and 55,000 tonnes of aluminium and earned foreign exchange of Rs679.48 crore in 1997- 98 against earnings of Rs637.86 crore in 1996-97. It increased its total sales turnover by 4.78 percent to Rs1853.54 crore and net profit by 11.17 percent to Rs546.97 crore in 1997-98. It has undertaken a Rs3727 crore expansion programme, which will increase mines capacity from 2.4 million tonnes to 4.8 million tonnes, aluminium capacity from 230,000 tonnes to 345,000 tonnes and captive power capacity from 720 mw to 840 mw. Nalco is the first Indian company to registered with the London Metal Exchange and has got ISO-9002 certification for all its units. (khr)
