NHS reforms in private

Article Abstract:

Changes in the British National Health Service (NHS) are affecting the design of new hospitals. Private investors are involved in the building of 'patient hotels,' that provide non-acute beds for those requiring minor treatment but who cannot be sent home. The first such hospital in England was finished in 1991 at Kingston Hospital and a survey has shown a 99.7% satisfaction rate for its patients. A similar 120-bed wing for the obstetrics and gynaecology hospital in Liverpool will be started in Aug 1992. Private investment may also be used for other NHS facilities such as restaurants, car parking and incineration.

Reforms on ice

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly apparent that some, or even most, of the economic reforms promised by Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji could be delayed or even reversed. Zhu is now relying on strong economic growth to create employment and thus offer opportunities for the large numbers of workers being laid off from state-owned enterprises. He has placed strong emphasis on the creation of a private housing market to boost domestic demand. However, people seem to have been encouraged to save, rather than spend, by the prospect of purchasing their own home.

What's the wrap? Private investing

Article Abstract:

The 'wrap-fee' business of retail stockbrokers is the fastest growing part of the industry and is proving very popular with private investors. The concept is that the brokerage makes money not on commissions but from a fee based on the investor's assets.
