NON-FERROUS RUST
Article Abstract:
The prices of non-ferrous metals, like aluminium, copper, zinc, tin, nickel and lead, on the London Metal Exchange (LME) are likely to fall further in 1999. Buyers are reluctant to enter into long-term contract expecting further drop in the prices of these metals. Aluminium is being traded at $1,700 per tonne in India, which is $400 more than the price on the London Metal Exchange now. The price difference was $50 per tonne in 1998. The expert group of the Finance Ministry of the Government of India has recommended that the duty on aluminium be reduced from 20 percent to 15 percent to increase exports. India has shortage of copper as the output is less than one lakh tonnes per annum (tpa). India's demand for zinc is 2.5 lakh tpa and its production is 1.7 lakh tpa. India offers world's best bauxite ores and value-added products. These facts, figures and views have been given in an editorial. (rk) (kvr)
