Article Abstract:
The government proposes to permit private operators to offer Internet services. Currently Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) holds monopoly over Internet services. Private operators like Dishnet, Bharti BT, Sprint RPG, Satyam Infoway plan to enter the business. The market for internet service providers (ISPs) is projected at Rs125 crore by the end of 1999 and Rs2,000 crore by 2003 AD. Private ISPs plan to offer value added services like personalised e-mail with a company logo and signature, voice e- mail, intranets, virtual private networks and roaming. Datapro Information Technology of Pune plans to invest Rs40 crore in Internet business and is targeting banks and service companies. Satyam Infoway of Chennai plans to invest around Rs40 crore in internet business. It plans to provide e-commerce service for companies and community services such as bulletin boards and chat sites. Bharti BT plans to invest Rs41 crore on Internet services. Dishnet plans to invest Rs40 crore to provide internet services in eight cities by March 1999. IMS plans $200m overseas expansion
Article Abstract:
Hongkong Telecom IMS introduced the "netvigator entrepreneur program" on 20 July 1998. The new program aims at encouraging people aged under 30 to come up with innovative business proposals using the Internet. Under the program, IMS will provide at least HK$200,000 for each innovative and potentially profitable proposal that could enhance Hong Kong's development in information technology. *
