Article Abstract:
In 1997, records, CDs and tapes worth Ft 12bn were sold in Hungary. The number of recordings sold amounted to 7.8mn. Popular music accounted for 6.9mn recordings, 3.5mn of which were foreign music. CDs accounted for about 40% of the sales volume, tapes for about 60%. In 1997, Hungarians spent on the average Ft 400-500 per person on recordings, blank tapes and video tapes, after only Ft 297 in 1996. The largest part of the sound-storage media on the Hungarian market is imported. In 1997, imports amounted to US$ 41.1mn, of which blank sound-recording media accounted for US$ 16.1mn (US$ 16.3mn) and recordings for US$ 25mn (up 20%). The largest importer was Germany. Hungarian companies exported recordings for US$ 17.3mn.

Sales of cars in South Africa are expected to decline by 3.7% to 384,7000 units. This includes 205,000 passenger cars 'Made in RSA', 56,000 (+11.9%) completely built-up imported cars, 110,200 (-6,4%) light commercial vehicles, and 13,500 (-1.9%) medium-weight or heavy commercial vehicles. Exports are to grow by 30% to 26,200 units, to which Volkswagen South Africa contributes 12,000 units. Exports of passenger cars are to grow by 43.4% to 15,000 units, light commercial vehicles by 25% to 10,000 units and medium-weight or heavy commercial vehicles by 8% to 1,200 units.

The Association of beer producers in Romania is expecting an increase of beer consumption in 1998, and a further increase to 9mn hl in 1999. South African Breweries is investing US$ 10mn in the modernisation of Pitber SA and Vultural SA to increase capacity by 25% to 1mn hl. Efes Balcan Invest BV of the Netherlands started construction of a new brewery in Ploiesti in 1997, investing US$ 70mn. At the beginning capacity will be 750,000 hl. However, the company aims to increase output to 1.5mn hl.
