New buyers revitalise Ostend sales: as auction mounts recovery

Article Abstract:

Ostend, once one of the largest auction market in Europe, has recovered and has gained notice in fish auction market, since the city agreed to mount a recovery plan and joined EFICE electronic trading network. An increase in 25% sales was observed, with Dutch buyers and Dutch processing industry entering the market.

Europe cuts TACs again - in bid to rebuild vanishing North Sea cod

European fisheries commission has cut down on the allowable catches once again. The object is to ensure environmental and economic sustainability of fisheries and in particular, cod populations. Fishermen, however, feel that the quotas are fixed on unproven scientific methods.

Reduced Dutch fleet struggling

Article Abstract:

The Dutch fishing industry is in a crisis. Nearly 25% of the Dutch fleet is bankrupt. From more than 600 vessels a few years ago, the fleet has come down to 375. The rising cost of Diesel is also affecting the profitability of the fishing industry.
