Hard grind in Hamburg

Article Abstract:

Greggersen Gasetechnik is a Hamburg-based precision engineering company that is one of the many small and medium-sized German companies involved in the export trade. The company grew rapidly in the 1980s and currently has a workforce of 38 highly-skilled artisans. Despite its past success in raising productivity and maintaining a high-quality product range, Greggersen faces an uncertain future with the onset of the single European market. The company has to cope with a business environment characterized by increasingly rigid environmental regulations and rapidly rising labor costs that makes it more difficult for smaller firms to remain internationally competitive.

Held in a legal swamp

Article Abstract:

Greek prime minister Constantine Mitsosakis has encountered legal and political difficulties in implementing his conservative government's ambitious privatization program. Legal complications associated with the nationalizations made by the previous socialist government have delayed the disposal of many of the larger state companies. Political resistance to the concept of privatization and bureaucratic delays have further complicated the process. Despite the problems encountered, the Greek government remains committed to reducing the state's role in the economy.
