No backing down over duty drawback
Article Abstract:
The recently concluded negotiations for the proposed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) produced tentative agreements providing for the elimination of duty drawback on Nafta-qualifying goods by Jan 1, 1996 for the US and Canada and Jan 1, 2001 between the US and Mexico. Drawback supporters contend that removing the drawback would diminish the competitiveness of US companies in the global market, but government negotiators believe the drawback's elimination would help prevent Mexico from turning into a platform for exports made of non-Nafta materials. Meanwhile, the US Customs Service continues to be criticized for its implementation of the drawback program.

American goods turn gray
Article Abstract:
The case involving Lever Brothers Co and its affiliated UK company has sparked legal interests on the importation of gray goods to the US. An issue involving the importation and selling of UK-made soap and dishwashing liquid products that possess distinctly similar characteristics with its US counterpart has been settled in court. District of Columbia Court of Appeals Judge Harold Greene declared that the importation of such physically different goods are in violation of the Lanham Act.
