No more Mr Nice Guy
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of projects involving space vehicles being smashed, including Lunar Prospector's crash into a crater on the moon in a bid to find water. Meanwhile, the European Space Agency aims to locate a comet and use a harpoon to skewer it, while the National Aeronautics and Space Administration aims to blow a hole with a projectile in a second comet. Two probes are also scheduled to smash into Mars in Dec 1999. They are to come from the Mars Polar Lander probe, and it is thought that this method will give deeper penetration of Mars' surface than using a robot.

Not exactly rocket science
Article Abstract:
University of Illinois researcher, Clifford Singer, is working on spacecraft transportation using ball-bearings. Ball-bearings are launched from a centrifuge and recaptured so they can be reused. Timing is important, as is a precise aim. The new system means that rocket fuel becomes less important and may not be needed in some cases. A reduction of 90% could be achieved in fuel needs for launching craft. An orbital field test could be carried out in two to three years from 1998.

Forewarned is what, exactly? Breast cancer
Article Abstract:
Recent research indicates regularly screening women under 50 for breast cancer does not reduce the rate of deaths from cancer. The process is costly but the American Cancer Society continues to recommend it to women in the US.
