Nothing is really private in Vietnam

Article Abstract:

Vietnamese Pres Le Duc Anh blamed a recent drug corruption scandal on the evils of individualism. Although there are now about 19,000 private businesses, the state has actually increased its share of the economy from 33% in 1990, to 40% in 1997. This could hinder continued economic growth.

The high number of business failures in the US and Europe in 2001 has highlighted the different ways in which the US and Europe deal with failed businesses. Europe seems more focused on guilt and revenge, while the US system gives firms a second chance.

Politicians around the world have determined there is a need to incorporate a nation's environmental health into its national accounts. The United Nations' system of national accounts has been deemed inadequate in this regard and needs further revision.
