Article Abstract:

In its fiftieth year of service, Air-India is swamped by competition on all sides. Its losses are over Rs250 crore for the past three years or between 1995 to 1998. It requires over Rs2,000 crore to pay back its liabilities. The management is now going all out to turn around the airline and start making profits by 2000 AD. It has taken up a financial restructuring programme comprising of cost cutting and spinning off divisions into profit centres. It plans to focus on the executive and first classes from which has potential to earns 70 percent of its revenue. A new Executive Class will be launched from September 1, 1998. Air- India will also install an yield management system which will plough back maximum revenues from each flight. Air-India may also be privatised. (uh)

AIR-INDIA SET TO CLIP ITS OWN WINGS

Article Abstract:

Air-India has decided to sell four of its old 747-200s, which will reduce its fleet size to 22 aircraft. The airline is selling the planes as it has decided to exit from European routes like Rome, Manchester and Frankfurt and redeploy the capacity on Gulf routes. The redeployment will render five 747-200s, which are now being used on the Gulf routes, surplus. (khr)

AIR-INDIA CLOCKS Rs129-CR LOSS IN FIRST HALF

Article Abstract:

Air India has registered losses of Rs129 crore in the first half of 1998-99 due to increased expenditure and a decline in revenues. Other reasons for its losses were rising interests, operational costs, depreciation in rupee value and increased landing, handling and navigational charges. The airlines had accumulated losses of Rs181.01 crore in 1997-98. (khr)
