Abusive spiral fractures of the humerus: a videotaped exception
Article Abstract:
A spiral fracture of the upper arm bone in an infant may have an innocent cause. This type of fracture in an infant commonly signifies child abuse. However, two cases are reported in which the fracture occurred as a result of turning a baby with an extended arm from stomach to back toward the side with the extended arm without lifting the baby's trunk. In the first case, a videotape made by the parents of their two-year-old playing with her 5-month-old brother recorded the event. In the second case, a father, who was alone with his 3-month-old daughter when the event occurred, was asked to demonstrate what happened with a doll. He demonstrated the exact same maneuver as was recorded on the videotape. In both cases, parents immediately sought medical care.

Volkswagen-Sarajevo
Article Abstract:
Skoda Auto (SA) (Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic), car company, and Unis Holding (Bosnia) have set up a joint venture which is now endangered by closure. A reason is the plant's low production. According to an agreement of SA's parent firm VW (Germany) and UNIS in 1998, the plant was to produce 5,000-10,000 Skoda Felicia and Octavia cars in 2000. The joint venture plans to assemble only 2,400 cars in 2000, 50% less compared to the original plan. In 1998 the firm produced 2,500 cars.
