Oceans apart: island dispute outrages Korea, bores Japan
Article Abstract:
Tokyo's territorial dispute with Seoul over the island Takeshima, or Tokdo, has S Koreans exercised but barely stirs a ripple of interest in Japan. The issue resurfaced recently when both countries laid out 200-mile economic zones that overlap around the island, but it has been a sore point since Japan's 35-year occupation of the Korean Peninsula. An approaching election in S Korea also fuels the flames. Japan also has territorial disputes with Russia to the north and China and Taiwan to the south.
